Special treatment for kids at
Thakadu and Tuningi
At Tuningi, children over the age of five and at Thakadu, children over the age of six will be allowed on game drives, but younger children will be taken out on shorter drives, known as ‘bumbles’. Children who stay behind during normal game drives times will be looked after by the lodges’ nannies at a baby-sitting rate.
At both lodges, during the morning game drive, the nannies will stay with the children until they wake up and then take them down to the main lodge for breakfast and entertain them until their parents return from their drive.
After breakfast, the children will be issued with a workbook and will go on a one hour, or shorter drive to one of the waterholes. They can tick off the things they have spotted in the workbooks and the one with the most ticks get a surprise on arrival back at the camps.
During afternoon game drives, the children will go on a treasure hunt to find items such as nests, bones, eggs and snake skins and will then be given an educational talk on each of the items.
On special occasions, the younger children will have their own boma dinner with one of the chefs, allowing them to make their own treats like a marshmallow braai. On other evenings they will assemble their own pizzas and decorate their cupcakes for dessert.
On departure of the family, the children are issued with a Tuningi or Thakadu ‘experience certificate’. |

No other holiday resort can be compared to Tuningi Safari Lodge. This 5-star lodge is a member of The Leading Independent Hotels of Southern Africa, and is situated on the picturesque 165, 000 acre malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve.
The Lodge...
Tuningi is one of the very few 5-star lodges in South Africa that welcomes children, and in by doing so, incorporates them into the wonders of nature, wildlife and our delicate eco-system.
The exclusive Bush Villas create spaces by blending the interiors with the bush, by utilising retractable doors and windows.
As night sets in, lanterns and candles are lit and the mood swings from a bush to a baroque setting. Guests returning from their game drive are presented with a bush extravaganza dinner, which is prepared by Tuningi’s Executive Chef, in the boma with a blazing log fire to keep them warm.
Tuningi’s highly qualified game rangers have a passion for the environment and the wildlife in Madikwe.
They offer a unique opportunity for those who are willing; to experience a guided walk on foot guided tour on an open air 4x4. Lion, elephant, buffalo, white and black rhino and leopard are just a few of the sightings you will see, but be sure to spot the endangered wild dog too.
Madikwe Game Reserve is a true African success story and Tuningi proudly enhances the experience!
Accommodation...
Tuningi Safari Lodge can luxuriously accommodate sixteen guests in exclusive Bush Villas. The lodge itself has been designed in such a way that it can be divided for families, intimate groups or VIP’s in search of utter privacy - a concept that is unique to Tuningi.
All rooms at Tuningi and Little Tuningi has air conditioning, ceiling fans, gas fireplaces, and en-suite bathrooms, beautifully appointed baths, outdoor rock showers and private wrap around wooden decks.
'Little Tuningi’ accommodates 6 guests in unsurpassed luxury with a designer kitchen, boma area, dinning room, lounge, wrap around wooden deck and private pool.
Purposely designed, ‘Little Tuningi’, is completely self-contained for those guests that are in search of ultimate privacy. Guests do of course have access to the Main Lodge area and its facilities.
The theme of the décor is ‘Colonial African chic’ and the main thatched lodge offers a spectacular lounge, a spacious dining room and a well-stocked bar with an impressive rim flow pool that overlooks a watering hole. All of which are interlinked by a sweeping wooden deck that leads to the boma area.
The Reserve...
Madikwe Game Reserve is MALARIA FREE and offers 165 000 acres of prime Game Viewing including Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, and Rhino. As well as the Big Five Madikwe offers fantastic opportunities to view the rare and endangered Wild Dog which is a mega "tick" on any game viewers list. There is also extensive plains game and over 340 species of birds to attract your attention.
The BBC and National Geographic have visited Madikwe on several occasions to capture the impressive wildlife, especially the wild dogs that have firmly placed Madikwe on the tourism map.
